The JEC European Composites show is currently being held in Paris until Thursday evening, where the wingsail foiling catamaran, Groupama C, is being showcased next to the Multiplast-Decision booth (stand A66). Not only did this boat effortlessly win the World C-Class Catamaran Championship, held in Falmouth (UK) last September, but it has also just been honored at the JEC Innovations Awards 2014!
Dominique Dubois, CEO of Multiplast and of the Group Carboman: "This award is recognition for the conviction in thin ply technology held by Multiplast for several years. Thanks to the Groupama Design Team's hard work and the audacity of Franck Cammas and Louis Viat, the mechanical properties and lightness
product were able to reveal all their potential for the Little America's Cup."
The final race of the World C-Class Championships has been run against Team Hydros, also made out of TPT®, by Décision SA (hulls, mast and wing), company of the Groupe Carboman.
Thin ply technology at Multiplast
This success takes place while a new Automated Tape Layer machine will very soon be installed at Multiplast. This 4th generation machine allows automatic lay-up of Carbon UD (Unidirectional) prepreg with fiber weights between 300 and 17g/m² ! The Carbon UD fibers are 2D plotted by the machine, then laid up manually in the 3D tooling. It is this technology that resulted in the award winning 8m long ultra-light hulls of the winning catamaran.
Corentin Lognoné, project manager at Multiplast, responsible for the Automated Tape Layer: "The tape layer will be installed in a specific ISO 8 clean room. The first qualification tests are being planned, notably for the new tape laying head, which can cut the tape at many angles, and lay down tapes as wide as 300mm. Many customers have already expressed their interest in this, in the aeronautical field amongst others."
