Club Med launched
After 5 years thought, design and some 60,000 man-hours of work achieved in one year, Club Med was introduced to her watery element on Monday May 8th 2000. Co-skippered by the New Zealand skipper Grant Dalton, she is the first of 3 maxi-catamarans* specially built by Multiplast for The Race. A great moment of emotion for all the employees of the yard – all 50 of them – and the Gilles Ollier Design Team, who have worked without a break to give birth to this exceptional boat.Gilles Ollier : Since the press conference organised by Bruno Peyron at the Paris Maritime Museum in 1993, after having won the first Jules Verne Trophy that same year on Commodore
Explorer designed and built by the yard, he launched the idea for THE RACE : a race round the world without limits for the year 2000. I was immediately attracted by this idea and its No Limits concept that renewed with the spirit of the first Route du Rhum , or the great ocean races, allowing designers to be freed from the usual constraints of rules. Also THE RACE will be the first race in which several multihulls will compete against each other round the world. And the year 2000 was quite symbolic. By entering the 3rd millennium with Club Med, we rather wanted to draw up a balance sheet of knowledge in matters of multihull naval architecture, of high-tech construction techniques and sophisticated composite materials. Club Med is an expression and the result of many years of work, with the best techniques of the moment. And just like her, I am certain that all the great boats imagined for THE RACE will remain in the history of sailing and will cause thousands of people throughout the whole world to dream. Rendezvous in a few weeks for Club Med's first transats and of course the start of The Race in Barcelona on December 31st 2000 at midday....
* with Team Adventure for American Cam Lewis and Code 1 (skipper still confidential), also built by Multiplast.
Team Adventure, the Norman American
The last half-hull of Cam Lewis s (USA) catamaran is under construction in Cherbourg (Normandy, France). Team Adventure, which will be launched in September 2000, sets herself apart from Club Med and Code One with more vertical transoms and steering wheels positioned farther forwards. The construction of Cam Lewis s (USA) catamaran, provisionally called Team Adventure, is progressing on schedule for launching in September 2000.The JMV yard in Cherbourg (Normandy, France) is on the point of starting the last half-hull for this third 33-m (110-ft) catamaran designed by the Gilles Ollier Design Team for The Race. Simultaneously, they will start assembling the first complete hull. The aft and central crossbeams are also under construction. All these operations are keeping about 30 people busy under the watchful eye of Josse Huet, the project manager delegated by Multiplast. The techniques used are exactly the same as those employed in Vannes – even if this catamaran will differ from her two sister ships on several points. The transoms of each hull lend themselves particularly well for customising, because they are made in separate moulds. Cam Lewis has taken advantage by choosing more vertical transoms than those of Club Med. Here are other characteristics specific to this catamaran: the steering wheels are positioned further forwards, just abaft the companionway cuddy, for better protection from the elements; bulwarks extend along the outer cockpit sides from this same cuddy; and a personalised interior layout will be fitted.Assembly of the platform is programmed for the end of July 2000, using elements that will have been prepared in advance for painting. Team Adventure will be launched in September in Cherbourg and will then rally Vannes to take delivery of her spars.
First sea trials for - CIAO GIANNI -
Jacky SETTON made no secret of his satisfaction at the first trials in the bay of Quiberon of his new boat built by MULTIPLAST. 10 knots upwind with the mainsail and solent in a wind of more than 20 knots. Good performance, sails well close to the wind, plenty of stability, and beyond all these qualities, what a pleasure it is to sail a yacht every bit as beautiful as she is simple to maneuver by a crew of one or two.Keel removed, mast unstepped, CIAO GIANNI is now loaded up on a truck, bound for Saint-Tropez where a team from MULTIPLAST will take care of getting her ready to sail again. The yacht will be fine-tuned and tweaked into top condition in the bay of Saint-Tropez before heading off to her home port. There is no doubt that CIAO GIANNI is a truly exceptional boat.

Launch of Loïck Peyron's boat for the next Route du Rhum
______________________________________________________________________Having built 3 of the biggest trimarans foe the next Route du Rhum (Banque Populaire, Prince de Bretagne et Sodebo Ultim'), it is now "Happy", the sister ship of Mike Birch's famous Olympus, being launched in front of the Multiplast yard.
A story of friendship...
Completely different to the typical realisations that come out of this yard, this is a project built on friendship and a mutual desire to see Loïck achieve his wish to take part in this 10th transatlantic race in a different way. For this original undertaking, Multiplast simply provided yard space, some tools and did some composite work.
Loïck Peyron :" This refit has been nothing but pleasure, the work to be done was quite considerable, and without being accomodated by Multiplast, it wouldn't have been possible."
